FSCS Limits

Various concerns emerged from the events of the recent market crisis and in July 2008 the Tripartite Authorities issued a consultation paper that described a number of improvements to the FSCS depositor protection arrangements. Since then we have been working with the FSA to consider the proposals.

These have included:

  • The announcement to increase the general depositor protection limit from £35,000 to £50,000 per person per deposit-taking institution.
  • The FSA’s CP 09/11 issued in March 2009 setting out arrangements for customers who have temporary high balances.
  • The FSA’s CP 09/03 issued in January 2009 outlined further proposals that would ensure a better understanding of the scheme and a quicker delivery of compensation.

We are supportive of the arrangements proposed for consumer protection and we will continue to focus on this important area and will monitor its progress.
