Ian Dickinson

Ian is head of General Insurance Compliance and Training for Brunsdon LLP, who are provincial insurance intermediaries based in Gloucester, founded in 1932. He is also the firm’s Projects & Integration Manager. Ian is still actively involved in general insurance mediation and personally services his long standing clients, so maintains an up-to-date experience of advising in the current market and regulatory conditions.

Background

Ian was previously the principal director responsible for General Insurance and Compliance at Brunsdon LLP in Bristol for 20 years. He has a wide range of experience drawn from acting as a general insurance broker for both personal and commercial clients.

Ian has also had a number of roles within the British Insurance Broker’s Association, (BIBA) responding to a wide range of issues affecting brokers and the industry as a whole, as well as helping formulate policy and guidance to members on regulatory topics.

Particular areas of interest on the Panel

For consumers, Ian is keen to see more focus on choice of distribution channels, and more emphasis given to the value of advice and the suitability of the product provided, with less influence on cost within the decision making process. At the same time there must be adequate warnings and information for consumers when buying products on a non-advised basis, particularly via web-based transactions.

For small firms, Ian’s focus is on risk based and proportionate regulation. He wants small firms to feel they can engage with the regulator and that the burden of regulation is commensurate to the risks they pose, and does not lead to a reduction in the number of small firms who provide valuable services to consumers.
