Andrew Turberville Smith
Andrew is Finance Director and Chief Operating Officer of Weatherbys Bank. As such, he has responsibility for all financial and regulatory reporting and compliance for the bank, as well as oversight of its internal systems, operations and control environment.
Background
Andrew originally qualified as a chartered accountant with Price Waterhouse in London. He then spent over 10 years in investment banking in London before moving into operational roles in insurance broking and latterly banking.
Particular areas of interest on the Panel
As he represents smaller banks on the Panel, Andrew is especially keen to ensure that policies and regulation, often designed for the larger banks, do not work to the detriment of smaller banks that still have an important role to play in providing customer choice and enhanced service levels. These issues are particularly acute at the present time with significant regulatory changes and consolidation in the banking sector following the recent sub-prime lending and wholesale funding crisis. This inflicted significant damage to the banking sector and ultimately led to government and regulatory intervention into some of the UK's largest financial institutions.
